If you get a new keyless entry remote (key fob) or change the battery in your remote you may need to reprogram your vehicle to accept the remote. This procedure works for a lot of 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and some 2008, and 2009 GM (Chevtolet and GMC) vehicles.

See below for vehicles that the procedure should work on.

  • Astro/Safari 2000-2003
  • Avalanche 2002-2006
  • Blazer/Jimmy 1998-2005
  • S-10/Sonoma 1998-2004
  • Silverado/Sierra 1999-2006
  • Suburban/Yukon 2000- 2006
  • TrailBlazer/Envoy 2002-2009

  1. Close all vehicle doors.
  2. Insert the key into the ignition.
  3. Hold down the power UNLOCK button on the driver’s door panel-continue to hold down until instructed to release in step 9.
  4. Perform steps 5 through 8 in fairly rapid succession.
  5. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position (as far as you can go without starting the engine).
  6. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  7. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
  8.  Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  9. Release the power unlock button on the door panel. The vehicle will lock and unlock the doors automatically.
  10. Hold down the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter simultaneously until the door locks and unlocks. This step may take up to 30 seconds.
  11. Repeat step 10 NOW for each additional transmitter (including any existing transmitters).
  12. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position in order to exit the transmitter programming mode.

I have tried several times to progam a new remote for my 2004 GMC SIERRA using these intructions. After I turn the key to the off position the second time, the locks cycle with me still holding down the unlock button. My new remote will not program and my current remote does not get reset. How do I find out why it does not go into programming mode?

I need to do this for a 2007 HHR. I’ve tried the procedure explained above but my car doesn’t go into programming mode. Does this not work on HHRs? I even read on the HHR Network that this would work. Any suggestions? I really don’t want to take this to a dealer.
